Playing at 3,996 locations, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” dominated the weekend box office. The latest X-Men film earned an estimated $90.7 million over the three-day weekend, putting it second all-time behind “X-Men: The Last Stand” ($102.8 million).
Days of Future Past also fell short of toppling “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as the biggest opening of the year.
X-Men also opened in many foreign markets and earned am outstanding $171.1 million, To date, Days of Future Past has earned $261,780,000 worldwide, and is on track to become one of the highest-grossing X-Men movies ever.
The film has received strong reviews (91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and good word-of-mouth (“A” CinemaScore), which should keep it near the top of the chart for some time.
On a side note, I saw “X-Men: Days of Future Past” over the weekend, but I got a nap and a few burgers in my future. so don’t expect my review until sometime tomorrow.
In second place, Godzilla plummeted 66 percent to $31.4 million. Looks like competition from the X-Men took its toll on old Gojira. the movie has now earned $148.8 million, and $166,600,000 in International markets.
The bomb of the week belong (not surprisingly) to Adam Sandler’s “Blended.” The comedy flopped with a weak $14.2 million this weekend. That’s over $10 million less than fellow Adam Sandler’ flop “Jack and Jill” ($25 million), and is only a bit higher than Sandler’s 2012 bomb “That’s My Boy” ($13.5 million).
According to Warner Bros., the audience for “Blended” was 56 percent female and 74 percent over the age of 25.
If you see Adam Sandler today, give him a hug.
