Forgive me for keeping this post short, but I’m still a little perturbed over Germany winning the World Cup. Anywho, thanks to strong reviews, good word-of-mouth, and likeable characters, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” easily dominated the domestic box office this weekend.
Debuting at 3,967 theaters, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” earned an estimated $73 million this weekend. That’s not close to the debuts of Transformers, Godzilla, or Captain America (they opened over $90 million).
However, $73 million is a 33 percent improvement over the $54.8 million debut of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Meanwhile overseas, Dawn brought in an additional $30 million.
According to 20th Century Fox, the audience for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” skewed male (58 percent) and older (55 percent over the age of 25). Roughly 36 percent of the weekend haul came from 3D ticket sales. The film received an “A-” CinemaScore, which could mean the movie will have a lengthy run.
Your top five movies this weekend:
1. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” $73 million
2. “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” $16.5 million
3. “Tammy,” $12.9 million.
4. “22 Jump Street,” $6.7 million
5. “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” $5.9 million
