For the record: I am well aware that last year I said I’d never do one of these posts again. But my tv keeps reminding me the MTV Video Music Awards are tonight. Not that I plan to watch the show. I learned my lesson last year when I tuned in just in time for the giant foam finger.
So why am I doing another one of these posts?
An unfortunate combination of a lot of free time, and football not starting for another couple of weeks.
Therefore, ladies and gentlemen and Furiated, welcome to the second annual TNU Video Music Awards!
As always, a quick reminder: I don’t listen to current music so most of the videos here are old. Well, most of them anyways. And away we go…
Best Video Filmed at Home Depot:
Journey – Separate Ways
I think my favorite part of this video is them playing fake instruments. Or maybe the keyboard on the wall.
Duo of the Century award:
Eddie Murphy and Michael Jackson – Whatzupwitu
For a few years during his heyday, Eddie Murphy thought he could sing. Luckily for us, “Whatzupwitu” pretty much put a nail in that coffin.
This cheap-o video features Eddie Murphy floating through an animated sky trying to get his serious musician on while poor Michael Jackson frolics in the background probably praying for this shoot to end.
Bes1980’s Special Effects:
The Jacksons – Can You Feel It
In the early 1980’s, Michael Jackson reunited with his former backup band. They recorded an album and embarked on a tour if I remember correctly.
“Can You Feel It” was probably the biggest hit from the reunion, and the video pretty much confirmed what we were all thinking: The Jacksons are beings from another planet with strange powers.
Careful, you Might Catch Something After Watching This Award:
Nicki Minaj – Anaconda
Drake’s best performance ever?
Way to Ruin a Classic:
The Beach Boys – California Dreamin’
Not sure why anyone thought remaking this song was a good idea. The Beach boys version is terrible and the video creeped me out. Why are they in a church? And are The Mamas & the Papas ghosts?
False Advertising Award:
Sisqo – Thong Song
For something called “The Thong Song,” I don’t see many whatchamacallit… thongs.
The Rosetta Stone Award:
Snow – Informer
When this song came out, the only lyric I understood was ” boom-boom down.”
