The long-awaited (so I’m told) big-screen adaptation of the best-selling Fifty Shades of Grey is poised to dominate the box office this weekend. The movie could even set a record when all is said and done.
The real question is: how big will this movie be?
“Fifty Shades of Grey,” is the film adaptation of the best-selling book by E.L. James, and it stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey. As you can probably guess, Fifty shades wont be a critical darling (30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but the film will be a phenomenon nevertheless.
I gotta admit, I don’t get the whole Fifty Shades phenomenon. Granted, I haven’t read the books, nor do I plan to. And I have zero intent to see the movie, so don’t hold your breath for a movie review.
Anywho, some people are predicting “Fifty Shades of Grey” will earn at least $100 million this weekend. The only way I can see that happening is if a ton of men get dragged kicking and screaming to see this movie. But even if that doesn’t happen, I still think Fifty Shades will earn around $85 million, more than enough to land at number one.
But chances are the movie won’t need help from a paying male audience. Over 100 million copies of the Fifty Shades book have been sold internationally. Meaning the movie already has a huge built-in audience who will show up this weekend. Whether the book’s hardcore fans like the movie, is another story.
The other new movie this weekend is “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” Now this is the movie I plan to see this weekend. Opening at 3,204 locations, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is based on the comic book The Secret Service, created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. The film stars Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, and Michael Caine.
This movie won’t win the weekend of course. But Secret Service should serve nicely as counterprogramming to Fifty Shades, luring both men, younger women, and comic geeks like me. Secret Service will do fine this weekend and should gross $30 million this weekend.
