Despite a triple threat of newbies hitting theatres this weekend , the top three spots will once again belong to the mighty ” Fifty Shades of Grey,” one my favorite movies this year, “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” and still keeping the kids quiet after all these years, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.”
“Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” “McFarland, USA” and “The DUFF” are all opening in at least 2,500 theaters this weekend, but it would be surprising, nay, shocking, if any of these movies earned near $11 million. Why?
First of all, “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” comes five years after the original. Not only that, but John Cusack did not return for the sequel. In the new movie, he’s been replaced by Adam Scott, but you probably wouldn’t know that from any the marketing campaign.
To me “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” has “Horrible Bosses 2” written all over it. In other words, this movie is gonna bomb.
Playing at 2,755 theaters we have, “McFarland, USA.” Kevin Costner has been the go-to guy for all sorts of sports movies for the las three decades. But the last time any of his sports movies made an impact was probably 1996’s “Tin Cup.” Although to be fair to Costner, I was a huge fan of last year’s “Draft Day.” I even placed it in my top ten movies of 2014.
“McFarland, USA” is a Disney movie, and it does have decent reviews (77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). Unfortunately for Mr. Costner, “McFarland, USA” will likely earn under $10 million over its opening weekend.
Opening at 2,575 locations, is comedy “The DUFF.” I’m going out on a limb here and say this will the bomb of the week for one simple reason: This type of movie has been made too many times already. I say this movie earns under $8 million this weekend.
