Yesterday was day one of the second annual SComicon, and Great Caesar’s Ghost, am I tried.
The event was over twice as big as last year, with more guest and vendors. The guest of honor was the Flash himself, John Wesley Shipp. Who by the way, is as nice as once can be. Later on I even got to meet Lady Thor herself, Toni Darling.
I met some great comic book people, including (but not limited to) Dave Dorman, Allen Bellman (the last surviving man to draw Captain America in the 1940’s), Chris Brunner, Andy Smith, and Tommy Lee Edwards. And of course I bought a few art prints here and there. with my favorite piece is the Tom Strong print by Andy Smith.
Going in I’d hoped to buy some original art from someone, but most of the stuff was well beyond my price range. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted to buy and original piece of art from Dave Dorman. But when I looked at the wifey, she had that look that every husband/boyfriend knows. So it was time to move along…
This year SComicon had more cosplayers, and I was able to meet the talented duo of Miracole and Chris Burns. They signed a couple of prints for me, and even spent a few minutes talking to us about what they’ve done in television and movies.
Also at the show was Callie Cosplay, who I had the chance to meet at last year’s event. But I think the highlight was meeting Toni Darling. She is the nicest person, super sweet with kids and one funny lady. If you ever have a chance to meet her at a convention, do it!
And finally, there was the comics! Among my purchases was a huge Amazing Spider-Man run (issues #306-425). There was also a bunch of Bronze Age incredible Hulks, 40 issues of Conan the Barbarian, and over 60 Vampirella comics.
There was one lady selling 40 comics for $20 bucks. At that price I dived right into those boxes and scooped up some Superboy, Doctor strange, Suicide Squad, Legends of the Dark Knight, and Green Lantern issues.
I think I did pretty good, even got a couple of Star Wars variants at decent prices. By day’s end I had well over 600 comics with me. Now, if my legs still work, on to day two!
