It looks like the Avengers run at the top of the box office is about to end. While most people are predicting “Pitch Perfect 2” will reign supreme this weekend, I of course, disagree, and believe “Mad Max: Fury Road” will rule the world.
Director George Miller’s R-rated Mad Max sequel, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, could be one of the year’s big hits. The film is opening at over 3,500 theatres across the country. And thanks to stellar reviews (it currently sports a 98 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), plus a big marketing push from Warner Bros., “Mad: Max: Fury Road” should bring around $40 million this weekend.
Back in 2012, Universal spent a modest $17 million to make “Pitch Perfect” a sleeper hit. The film went on to gross $113 million worldwide.. For “Pitch Perfect 2,” Universal gave director Elizabeth Banks a $29 million budget. So regardless of where Pitch 2 opens, it will be a successful movie for stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Hailee Steinfeld.
I haven’t seen the first “Pitch Perfect,” and I have zero plans to see Pitch 2. Not that I have anything against the series, it’s just not my kind of movie. In fact, it’s probably not many people’s type of movie. Don’t get me wrong, “Pitch Perfect 2” has a strong and solid fanbase. But Pitch 2 is catering to a relatively tiny audience.
