It took Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Ester Dean, Hana Mae Lee, Alexis Knapp, and Elizabeth Banks to lay a smack down on poor Mad Max.
This just wasn’t a fair fight people!
“Pitch Perfect 2” won the weekend battle with a robust $70.3M in 3,473 theaters. Pitch 2 surpasses the abomination knowns as “High School Musical 3” to become the biggest movie musical opening of all time. Pitch 2’s debut is also well above the first Pitch Perfect’s entire theatrical total of $65 million. I guess I underestimated how rabid the fanbase for this series is, ’cause damn, did they show up.
Meanwhile over at Warner Bros. “Mad Max: Fury Road” had a pretty decent weekend too. This R-rated, post-apocalyptic tale has earned rave reviews, and it brought in a solid $44.4 million. Add another $65 million from international markets, and Mad Max has already earned over $109 million worldwide. Warners, Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and George Miller. should all be very happy with this opening.
In other news, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” blew past $1 billion worldwide on Friday. As of now, Age of Ultron is the eight highest grossing movie of all time, coming in just below everyone’s favorite Christmas movie, “Iron Man 3.”
