After the most disappointing Memorial Day weekend in nearly fifteen years, the box office should rebound nicely this weekend thanks to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “San Andreas.”
The reviews for Brad Peyton’s CGI-heavy disaster movie are not that great (51 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but most people are still expecting “San Andreas” to land somewhere around the $40 million mark.
Of course the Chosen One, The Rock, will get all the credit for this film’s success. But I’m gonna give credit where credit is due. I’m seeing “San Andreas” for one reason, and one reason only: my girl, Carla Gugino.
But “San Andreas” isn’t the only new movie out this weekend. Also hitting theatres is Cameron Crowe’s latest rom-com “Aloha.” Despite a strong cast, the movie has a tough road ahead as it tries to overcome bad reviews (13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), and bad press.
As you may have heard, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans and multiple Hawaiian activists have criticized the film for depicting a white-washed version of the islands.
I would be very surprised if “Aloha” even makes it to the top five this weekend. Looks like Cameron Crowe’s career is still in a slump.
