Male strippers VS. A 67-year-old Austrian robot from the future
all this, plus fireworks and hot dogs too!
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s back in “Terminator Genisys,” the softish reboot of the once highly acclaimed series. The movie is off to a good start, earning over $8 million since opening on Tuesday night. Genisys is expected to make about $30 million over the weekend.
Believe it or not, that would put the film in the same ballpark as “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” which opened way back in 1991 to $31.8 million.
“Terminator Genisys” however, is not expected to match the $44 million and $42.6 million debuts of “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” and “Terminator Salvation.” But Genisys should still finish with around $50 to $55 million for the five-day period.
Then there’s the movie our own NYPinTA is really exited about: “Magic Mike XXL.” The stripper sequel has taken an early lead over Ahhhnold, with a little over $9 million since opening Tuesday night. The original “Magic Mike” scored a surprising $39.1 million debut in the summer of 2012, on its way to a $113.7 million domestic total.
The XXL version isn’t expected to top the original’s debut, and it should be interesting to see if the lack of Matthew McConaughey will hurt the sequel. The good news is that XXL should still bring in about $29 million over the three-day weekend and about $45 to $50 million over five days.
But can either “Terminator Genisys” or “Magic Mike XXL” topple “Jurassic World”? I say nein.
