From everything I’ve read over the last couple of days, it seems the general consensus among box office gurus is that “Pixels” will open in first place somewhere in the $25 and $30 million ballpark. There are even a few brave souls who think “Pixels” will open with at leat $40 million for the weekend.
“Pixels” may be the favorite to win the weekend, but all of those people predicting a big win for the movie are forgetting that “Pixels” has one major liability:
It’s quite possible this movie opens at number one, but it won’t be a strong debut. Marvel’s Ant-Man” could hold up better than expected, or even “Minions” could bounce back strong. And like it or not, Adam Sandler’s career has seen better days. Can you remember the last decent movie he made? Neither can I.
“Pixels” has already been critically panned (19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), and buzz for the movie isn’t very high. Now, to be fair, plenty of Sandler films get brutal reviews and have done well at the box office. For instance, “Grown Ups 2” still has a 7 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the movie opened to $41.5 million two years ago. In 2008 “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” (38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) still opened to $38.5 million.
The way I see it, “Pixels” will open closer to $20 million this weekend. Unless of course 1980’s nostalgia brings a ton of people in. Or maybe people just want to stare at Peter Dinklage’s mullet.
