The most hated comic book movie in years is finally here!
That’s right boys and girls, after nearly two years of shenanigans, the Fantastic Four reboot is now playing at your local theatre. Let the hate begin!
Opening in 3,995 locations, Fox’s “Fantastic Four” should win the weekend, even with the tsunami of negativity from fans, and just plain ugly reviews from critics (10 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). And the bad press continues as director Josh Trank slammed the final cut of the movie, and blamed Fox for the poor reviews.
Maybe he’s right, maybe he’s wrong, we’ll probably never know. Regardless, Josh Trank has already lost a directing job thanks to his behavior on “Fantastic Four,” and he’ll lose more if he doesn’t shut up.
Also in theatres this weekend is “The Gift,” a psychological thriller from actor turned director Joel Edgerton. You may know his from such classics as “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Oh right, nobody saw that movie. “The Gift” also stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall, and should open with around $10 million.
For the wee little ones there’s the critically acclaimed “Shaun the Sheep.” Basically if you enjoyed “Chicken Run” and anything Wallace and Gromit, you’ll enjoy this movie. Shaun should open with around $12 million, and with a bit of luck, the movie could have a decent run like “Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the WereRabbit” ($56.1 million domestic, $192.6 milliion worldwide).
And finally, “Ricki and the Flash” lands in 1,600 locations this weekend. It doesn’t really matter what this movie is about, all that matters is that Meryl Streep is starring in it. This basically means that regardless of the film’s quality, Meryl Streep will be nominated for an Academy Award next year at the annual ceremony honoring Meryl Streep.
