You could say Captain America has come a long way since he joined the MCU in 2011 with the gawd-awful “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
His third film, “Captain America: Civil War” took control of the weekend box office, bringing in the fifth largest opening weekend ever with an estimated $181.79 million opening weekend.
Civil War is the third largest opening for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,. In fact, and the Captain America film series continues to soar: Civil War’s opening saw an astonishing 91.3% increase over the opening for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” just two years ago.
Things looked good heading into the weekend, as Civil War saw great reviews (90% on RottenTomatoes), record Fandango pre-sales for a superhero film, and even scored an “A” CinemaScore. Globally the film’s total is now up to $678 million after launching internationally last weekend and bringing in an estimated $220 million from overseas markets this weekend.
Meanwhile somewhere at Warner Bros. some studio exec is crying in a corner. Wait a sec, I think that’s Zack Snyder…
The weekend’s number two film, “The Jungle Book,” dropped 50% this weekend and added an estimated $21.8 million to its domestic total, which is close to $285 million. Internationally, “The Jungle Book” added $24.1 million this weekend from 52 territories as its global total is over $776 million, placing it third on the 2016 worldwide charts.
And oh yeah, Disney brought in over $200 million this weekend alone, and the studio became the fastest to cross the $1 billion mark in domestic earnings in just 128 days, destroying the 165 day record set by Universal just last year.
In third place we find Open Road’s “Mother’s Day.” The ensemble feature had a disappointing opening weekend last week but rebounded surprisingly well by seeing a 7.6% increase this weekend, bringing in an estimated $9 million as its domestic total is now just over $20 million. Maybe instead of opening a week before the Mother’s day, Open Road should have waited until the actual Mother’s Day weekend?
