Fans went bonkers last week when “The Bourne Identity” and “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman signed on to helm “Dark Universe,” the film that will see several of DC’s supernatural comic Justice League Dark brought together.
There’s no official word from Warner Bros. on what characters will be used in the movie or what actors might play them, although in the last couple of years, screenwriter Guillemo del Toro said that the film would center around John Constantine.
Of course the Justice League Dark comic featured more than just Constantine, so the time has come to give Warner Bros. a few ideas on who should play the main characters…
Two actors having played John Constantine over the years: Keanu Reeves in the 2005 movie, and Matt Ryan in the more recent underrated tv show. I don’t expect either guy to return to the role for a number or reasons, so my choice to take over the part is… Eddie Redmayne.
There is no denying the fact that Eddie Redmayne can do it all. He’s an action force that can handle any genre you throw at him. Just give him a smoke and a trench coat, and you got Constantine. More importantly, he’s a well-respected actor and would bring a ton credibility to “Dark Universe.
Zatanna Zatara, the backwards-spelling magician, has already appeared in live action in “Smallville” played by Serinda Swan. She was wonderful as Zatanna, I just wish she’d been on the show more than a couple of episodes.
Anywho, for Zatanna’s big screen debut, I think the actress should be tall, with dark hair, and she must be able to handle action. My choice for Zatanna is… Alexandra Daddario.
We saw last year in “San Andreas” that she can hold her own in action scenes, and soon we’ll see her do comedy in “Baywatch.” Both talents will come in handy in “Dark Universe” as she battles the bad guys and Constantine’s advances. Not to mention, she’s gonna look damn good as Zatanna!
Deadman (Boston Brand)
Trapeze artist Boston Brand was once a famed circus performer, until the day he was murdered. Brand now walks the Earth between the realms of life and death as Deadman, tasked with discovering the truth of his murder and forced to help those destined to repeat his sins. And who better to bring Boston to life than Matthew McConaughey?
The Oscar winner has the right look for Deadman, he’s skinny-yet-muscular and should have no problems pulling off the bald look. Plus, there’s no doubt he will nail the cocky acrobat persona.
Surprisingly, McConaughey has never played a comic book character before, but I would love to see what he could bring to Deadman and the DC universe.
Swamp Thing (Alec Holland)
Alec Holland was a botanist who died in the swap after a rival scientist, planted a bomb – setting Holland on fire and infecting with chemicals. The deformed scientist is the perfect role for Ron Perlman.
Although I have a hard time seeing Ron Perlman as a botanist, I think he was born to play Swamp Thing. And his screen time as Alec Holland can be limited if need be.
Etrigan the Demon (Jason Blood)
In the comics, Jason Blood was a Druid during the time of King Arthur, while Etrigan served as a servant to Merlin the magician. In modern times Blood can summon the powers of Etrigan the Demon to help fight evil.
To pull off playing Blood, I can think of only one man: Ewan McGregor. He’s had a long career in movies, and he was the only decent thing about the Star Wars prequels. It’s shocking that Ewan McGregor has not been cast in a major comic book movie yet.
That’s my list so far, feel free to share yours down below or on out Twitter page. Hopefully we hear some concrete news from Warner Bros. soon, that way fans can start the debate for real.
