I know I’m a little late to the party with this one, but I was dealing with a small flooding issue at my house. Otherwise this post would have gone up a couple of days ago. But the leak in the laundry room has been fixed, so its back to business.
As most of you know by now, last week Variety surprised everyone by announcing that a Batgirl movie is in the works at Warner Bros. And that Avengers 1 & 2 director Joss Whedon is in talks to write, direct, and produce the film. I am one of those who think this is a great idea, and I can’t wait to see what Whedon does with the character.
With over 50 years of Batgirl stories, there’s definitely plenty of source material Joss Whedon can work with. However, there are some things I really don’t want to see in the Batgirl film. Or at the very least, not in the first film (assuming there is a sequel). Below are a few things I think Joss Whedon should stay away from:
Batgirl: Year One
This one is probably a long shot, but I’m really hoping the Batgirl movie is not an orign story. I don’t need to see what drove Barbara Gordon to wear the cowl, or how she keeps her identity secret from commissioner Gordon. But, Warner Bros. will probably want an oring tale so they can introduce the character to non comic book readers.
Personally, I would much rather see a Batgirl that’s been crime fighting for a couple of years already. This doesn’t mean she knows everything about being a superhero, but it would be nice to see Batgirl do her own thing instead of waiting for Batman or Nightwing to lead the way.
Batman: The Killing Joke is one of the most famous Batman stories ever. This is due to a few reasons, but the main one is because in it, Barbara Gordon is shot by the Joker and is paralyzed. Barbara is forces to retire as Batgirl, trading in her cape and cowl for a computer, becoming the top hacker known across the DC superhero community as Oracle.
Killing Joke is a great story. but I don’t need to see it right away. Let us get to know Batgirl in and out of costume before they go and have her shot. There is plenty of time do translate the Killing Joke in a sequel.
Batman: The Killing Joke the comic is fantastic. The animated movie from last year a pile of steaming crap. One of the reasons for this, is the unnecessary romance between Batman and Batgirl.
One: there’s no such romance in the The Killing Joke comic. This bit of nonsense was just foolishly added by the movie writer and producer. Two: I have zero desire to see a mid 40’s Ben Affleck having sex on a roof with a 20 something Batgirl.
If Joss Whedon wants to give her a relationship with Nightwing that’s fine, or even with another superhero, that’s fine too. He can even create a new charcter if he wants. But please, no romance stuff with the Batman.
Anywho, that’s my list. we’ll see what Joss Whedon comes up with soon. I can’t wait to see what he does with the characters, and who he casts in the lead.
