On this day in TNU history, TNU members Laneit, Furiated, and myself traveled with our friend Boosie (not his real name) to the city of Detroit. Our mission: that Sunday’s football game between the Buffalo Bills and the Detroit Lions.
The overnight 12 hour journey took us from Boston, to Canada, and down to the great state of Michigan. We finally arrived at the hotel around 6 A.M. on Saturday, and decided to go straight to bed because later that day we wanted to visit the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky Ohio.
To be honest, I’m not much of an amusement park guy, but I figured I had never been to Ohio, so at least I could cross another state off my list. Plus I kept thinking, isn’t that where “Tommy Boy” took place?
Meanwhile, back in Detroit…
I can’t remember the hotel we stayed at, but I do know Furiated chose the place because we could walk to the stadium from there on Sunday. Things didn’t start well because first room the hotel gave Furiated and me, was occupied. But that was just the beginning of out stay at this place.
The front desk apologized, and gave us another room; one without a working lock. So back down to the lobby we went for another apology. They gave us another room, but this time they sent a hotel employee with us to our third room.
As we exited the elevator, we were greeted by a motionless guy lying on the floor. The hotel employee didn’t even look at the guy or check him for vital signs. This led us to believe this was normal. By the way, he was still there when we left a few hours later.
Anywho, after sleeping for a little while, Furiated asked if we wanted breakfast or lunch. I told him I didn’t care as long as it was food. This is my favorite moment with Furiated because this was the day he introduced The Nerds Uncanny to the happiest place on earth:
That day alone, we ate all three meals at Steak ‘n Shake. Since that fateful day I’ve eaten at Steak ‘n Shakes in six states and I’m hoping to add to the total. As for the rest of the trip:
- We made it to Cedar Point and I nearly froze to death
- The next afternoon the Detroit Lions beat the Buffalo Bills 20–17.
- Before heading home we loaded up my Scion XB with many, many cases of Faygo. The guy at the Canadian border thought we were nuts.
- Laneit was caught speeding somewhere between Niagara Falls and Albany. All I really remember is waking up and seeing flashing lights and Laneit telling me to “Shut up, and go to sleep.”
