Fresh off the heels of DC’s Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad event, Batman is forming a new Justice League to help the planet. This time, Batman’s idea is one redemption, as in everyone deserves of a chance to be a hero, regardless of your past.
That’s why the first member of the new Justice League of America is Killer Frost, who impressed Batman with her actions during Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad. In issue #1, Frost serves as inspiration for Batman’s new League. Some may question Batman’s decision to add a killer to the team, but Batman repeatedly vouches for Frost.
Other team members include Black Canary, Vixen, Lobo, a version of the Atom I hand’t seen before, the highly underrated The Ray. Perhaps not the most conventional super-hero team, but there is plenty of room to explore some interesting relationships. For instance, Black Canary is none too pleased to be teaming up with Killer Frost.
This first issue is really just setting up for whatever will come next. Most of this issue is Batman bringing the characters together and having to explain why Killer Frost is there. But Steve Orlando is a solid writer, and his versions of these characters are rather good so far. And I have faith Orlando has a big picture of what he wants to do with this team.
The artwork by penciller Ivan Reis goes a long way in elevating what was otherwise an okay issue. His style is bold, and almost cinematic. Even the dialogue heavy scenes were fun to look at. Hopefully he and the rest of the art team stay on the book for a while because his art will excite new and old fans alike. I particularly liked his version of Black Canary even if the costume isn’t all that great.
Although Justice League of America: Rebirth #1 isnt’ perfect, this was a strong start to a brand new era of the League. I don’t know for sure where this team is headed, but I will be sticking around for at least a few more issues to find out.
Justice League of America: Rebirth #1 final score: B+
