Most of the time, the wifey and I can agree on where to grab dinner, but tonight it took a while for us to decide. I had a craving for Italian, while she felt like Mexican. To make matters worse, the in-laws didn’t feel like either of those. We each threw out a few ideas on where to go, but nothing stood out. The old folks tought Golden Corral was the place to go, but it was packed, so that was out. In the end, we ended up eating at a local New York style pizza place, so I guess I won.
As I waited for my food, I kept trying to think of other places we could have gone, and then it hit me: Once upon a time, long before I discovered Golden Corral, there was a place one could get Italian, Mexican, and a good old-fashioned American hamburger. Not only could you get all that food, but it was buffet style and incredibly cheap. And where was this magical place? The Wendy’s SuperBar.
The SuperBar was the holy grail of random food, most of which you’d never associate with Wendy’s. At first glance, the SuperBar looked like your average salad bar, but it was much more. Sure, there was a salad station, which I think was called ‘Garden Spot’ or something along those lines, but there was also a pasta station! The pasta station was loaded with rotini and spaghetti, and a couple of sauces. and plenty of garlic bread sticks. I even remember having pizza at the SuperBar once. Unfortunately it tasted like the pizza we used to get at school, so I never had it again.
The SuperBar also had a Mexican station, which was mostly a taco bar with refried beans, rice, and taco meat. I could be wrong, but I believe the taco meat was the same meat used in the chili. But hey, you got your choice of soft or hard shell tacos. The wendy’s SuperBar may have had a desert station, but I wasn’t that much into deserts, so I never checked those out.
I don’t know why the SuperBar went away, but I think Wendy’s should bring it back. With families looking to save money, it could do very well for them. One last thing, as I was looking for a picture of the SuperBar, I noticed the logo looks an awful lot like the classic WWF SummerSlam logo.
