What a bizarre morning. Never before have Oscar nominations pissed me off so much. As I posted earlier, the Oscar nominations were announced this morning in Hollywood. In hindsight maybe I should have stayed in bed and caught up later, then I wouldn’t be so mad. Regardless, to those lucky enough to have been nominated, congratulations. Your nominations are well deserved, I just wished there was room for more.
In this post I’m focusing on those who got a big middle finger from the Academy. I’ll try to keep this short, but I make no guarantees. Here we go…
This was a huge year acting snubs. In my other post I mentioned Javier Bardem, Judy Dench, and Samantha Barks. All three deserved a nod, but they weren’t alone. Richard Gere in “Arbitrage,” Leonardo DiCaprio in “Django Unchained” and John Hawkes in “The Sessions” are also worthy of nominations. In Best Supporting Actress Marion Cotillard in “Rust and Bone” was also left out. By the way, all four actors I mentioned were nominated for Golden Globes.
Ben Affleck’s “Argo” nabbed seven nominations, including Best Picture, supporting actor Alan Arkin, and adapted screenplay. Yet Affleck himself was left out of the best director category. Joining him is ” Zero Dark Thirty” director and Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow, despite her film’s five nominations — among them Best Picture, actress Jessica Chastain, and original screenplay. The directing category is also missing Quentin Tarantino for “Django Unchained” and “Les Miserables” director Tom Hooper. That’s an impressive list if you ask me.
In best picture land, the James Bond film “Skyfall” I thought could be a dark horse, but it was left out. Not that it had a chance at winning best picture, but a nod would have been nice. Over the years there hasn’t been much Oscar love for 007. However, the film did garner five nods though , including original song. Since the Oscar telecast is having a tribute to the Bond flicks, I expect “Skyfall” will win for best song. Oh, did you know Adele has a last name and its Adkins?
Meanwhile, the year’s biggest movie “The Avengers”nabbed a nomination for best visual-effects as did Christopher Nolan’s Batman swan song, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Like I said, a lot of snubs this year, but the Academy managed to find room for a Seth MacFarlane nomination. I wonder though, if he wasn’t hosting, would he have been nominated?
Skyfall really deserved a nod for best film but I’m happy it got one for best cinematography. Although it would have been nice to see Javier Bardem and Judy Dench receive a nomination I’m not too sad. They both already have a statue and I haven’t even been nominated once! Not even once!
