What I thought about it…
If you thought Kelly Thompson was only good at writing humor, outcomes The End: Captain Marvel #1, arguably one of the best Captain Marvel stories in years.
The year is 2051 and Captain Marvel has spent the last fifty years in space, doing what she does best: fighting for justice and keeping the peace. Shockingly, this issue reveals that her fifty years away from home was by choice, and it all began when Carol Danvers was too far away to help her friends.
The End: Captain Marvel #1 details the guilt Captain Marvel has felt ever since she was an entire galaxy away, and wasn’t able to return in time to help save the planet. After losing everything and everyone she cared for, Carol left earth for what she thought was the final time. That changes when her long-dormant Avengers communicator flashes the call “Avengers Assemble.”
With her work on the monthly title and now with The End: Captain Marvel #1, Kelly Thompson has made her mark as THE Captain Marvel writer. Her love and knowledge of the character are second to none. But what puts Thomson above the rest is that she focuses on Carol Danvers the person, and not just Captain Marvel the hero. Time and time again, Kelly Thompson shows that Carol’s true power lies in her humanity, and in her friendships and relationships.
Meanwhile, the art by regular Captain Marvel artist Carmen Carnero is perfect. Carnero’s art has really grown on me over the last year, but in The End: Captain Marvel #1 the artist took things to another level. I thought Camero did a really nice job making the kids of superheroes look enough like their parents, which helped build the emotion Carol experiences when she returns to earth.

Over the last couple of years, we have had the Life of Captain Marvel mini which shaped the current monthly book, all written by Kelly Thompson. With her stories she had reshaped the character and the world around her, and The End: Captain Marvel #1 would be a fitting end to Carol’s story.
The End: Captain Marvel #1 score: A+
